Grigg has played last game for Sunderland after confirmed news – Phillips
Kevin Phillips is adamant Sunderland fans will never see Will Grigg wearing their red and white shirt again.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner said the quicker the 30-year-old moves on permanently “the better” for all parties.
Sunderland confirmed on deadline day that the striker had joined Rotherham United on a season-long loan deal.
Grigg’s contract at the Stadium of Light expires at the end of June next year and he is not expected to be offered an extension.
The Northern Ireland international has endured a difficult time on Wearside since his blockbuster move from Wigan Athletic in January 2019.
He has contributed just eight goals and three assists in 62 appearances across all competitions.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Grigg had likely played his last game for the Black Cats, Phillips said:
“Yeah, I think that’s the last we will see of him at Sunderland to be honest.
“It just hasn’t worked out for whatever reason. The quicker he moves on the better, for both parties.
“I cannot see him wearing a Sunderland shirt again.”

Speaking on his departure, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman told club media: “Will’s had limited opportunity in and around the team and this is a great opportunity for him at an important time in his career.
“We wish him well with this next step at a great club with good people.”
