Even though Gamboa has rarely featured for the Hoops this season, he is a still a regular for his national side, making his 61st appearance in the loss to England.
Football Insider verdict
Congratulations really must be given to Cristian Gamboa, for managing to turn in consistently solid performances for his country despite not featuring for his club side for months. When you look back at Brendan Rodgers’ time in charge of the Hoops in years to come, the treatment of Gamboa must go down as one of the most bizarre aspects of what has been a massively successful reign so far. The only surprising aspect is that he hasn’t went out on loan yet, but that might change over the summer. It will be intriguing to see how Hoops fans react to Gamboa’s performances in the upcoming World Cup. If he performs well in the tournament, particularly against Brazil, there will be a groundswell to give him a chance in the first-team next season. It has to be said though, that the chances of him shining against Brazil are probably quite limited, but you never know in football.
