Guardian: Seven players prove this is one area of Pochettino’s Tottenham management that can be questioned

Mauricio Pochettino’s recruitment at Tottenham is the one area of his management that can be questioned, according to a report.

The Guardian claim there are no other question marks hanging over the Argentine who has totally transformed Spurs during his three-year reign.

But it is said that Pochettino, whose title is manager rather than head coach and is involved in all aspects of the club, has a record that is “patchy at best” when it comes to signing players.

The Guardian point out that player acquisition is not down to Pochettino alone, noting the role played by head of recruitment Paul Mitchell, who is on gardening leave after handing in his resignation.

Yet the incoming transfers have been mixed over the last three years despite the resounding success of the captures of Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier, plus Victor Wanyama last summer.

Big-money signings Moussa Sissoko and Vincent Janssen have had wretched campaigns following their arrivals last summer, while the likes of Federico Fazio, Benjamin Stambouli, Kevin Wimmer, Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kévin N’Koudou have made no impact.

The report makes the point about Pochettino in the transfer market as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy hailed the manager’s “real skill at developing players”.

Tottenham are set to finish second this season after recording their highest points tally of the Premier League era and mounting the only title challenge to champions-elect Chelsea.

In other Tottenham news, the club have sensationally terminated the contract of one of their defenders.
