Noel Whelan has been left raving over “brilliant” Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as the club reportedly prepare to offer him a new contract.
The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 29-year-old is underappreciated by supporters for the work he does in the middle of the park.
The Guardian report that Liverpool and Wijnaldum have held positive talks over a new deal which could run until 2024 or 2025.
The Dutch star’s current deal is set to expire next summer.
Whelan insists that Liverpool are making a great decision to keep Wijnaldum tied down, suggesting that he goes under the radar with his performances.
Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s been fantastic, since coming away from Newcastle he’s been brilliant, he really has.
“He’s one of those players, a bit like Fabinho, a bit like Firmino as well, understated, goes under the radar and people don’t actually appreciate what he brings to the side because he’s not scoring the goals, doing the flicks, doing the tricks.
“He brings something different, he’s got a great relationship and you can see that the midfield between Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson, they’ve got a great understanding and I’m really glad they’re rewarding him with that new contract because he’s grown as a player.”
Wijnaldum has played 177 times for Liverpool since joining from Newcastle back in 2016, with 18 goals under his belt.
He has missed just one Premier League game all season and has made a total of 38 appearances across all competitions.
