Alex McLeish has been left in awe of Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa and insisted there’s little wonder Pep Guardiola’s “drooling”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League, Scotland and Rangers manager is in no doubt about the “remarkable” Argentine who has overseen Leeds’ revival.
Bielsa will take charge of his first Premier League match on Saturday after his United side blew the rest of the Championship away last season to win the division by 10 points.
It came in the manager’s second season at Elland Road after his first had seen a huge uplift in Leeds’ performances and results only for them to narrowly miss out on automatic promotion.
Asked by Football Insider for his verdict on Bielsa, McLeish replied: “A remarkable bloke. When I hear that Guardiola’s drooling over Bielsa, you know that this guy’s something really special.
“I’ve never met him, just watching him patrolling up and down the dugout, the hands behind the back, he seems a really intense coach and it looks like he just lives for the game and that’s his raison d’etre.
“He’s obviously got family and stuff that will be his first and foremost but the way that he attacks the football world has been a bit of a whirlwind for the British public.
“They will be looking at him and thinking: ‘Woah, this guy is something else’.”
Leeds’ promotion ended their 16-year spell in the lower leagues and brings a historic return to the top flight.
Bielsa has yet to sign an extension to his United contract but the club have let it be known they expect the deal to be finalised imminently.
