Guillem Balague delivers big Tottenham transfer update
By Dominic Toner
Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed that Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is set to remain at Spurs in the summer amid reported interest from Real Madrid.
The Telegraph reported on Monday that the Spanish giants had identified Spurs’ 30-year-old shot stopper as a potential summer target.
The report detailed that Madrid are keen on signing a new world-class goalkeeper in the summer when their transfer ban ends and have been looking at several options from the Premier League.
Balague has delivered the big Spurs transfer update that Lloris is not on Madrid’s radar and one of their top performers is set to stay at White Hart Lane.
It is understood that Madrid will chase Manchester United’s David de Gea and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois instead.
“I understand Hugo Lloris is not on Real Madrid’s radar – it is clear to me that he will remain at Spurs,” Balague told Sky Sports’ live blog (Friday, 2:53pm). “Thibaut Courtois is an easier option than David de Gea, who remains their No. 1 target.
“Courtois is second on the wishlist and Real are confident they will get either Courtois or De Gea.”
Lloris looks set to remain with the north London club for the foreseeable future and he signed a new contract back in December, which will keep him at the club until 2022.
The France international is regarded as one Mauricio Pochettino’s most trusted players and is the captain of the side.
The goalkeeper has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League since he joined in 2012 from Lyon and is the first-choice option ahead of Michel Vorm.
Football Insider verdict:
Spurs fans will be thrilled that Madrid are not eyeing a move for Lloris as they are one of the few clubs that could prize him away from White Hart Lane. The goalkeeper has been a fantastic player during his time with Spurs and is currently in the peak of his career. He has racked up 195 appearances for the north London club and it’s hard to see how they could find a better replacement. Lloris has played a major role in the club’s defensive record this season as they have conceded just 16 goals in 24 appearances, which is the best in the Premier League. The goalkeeper is the number one option for both club and country, and Spurs can look forward to many more years with the reliable player.
