Middlesbrough are preparing to rival AC Milan for Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu, according to a reliable journalist.
Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claimed that the Toffees might soon receive a call from their Premier League rivals Boro for the services of the 22-year-old attacker.
The expected approach comes after reports that Deulofeu was keen to join Serie A giants AC Milan, who have already submitted a bid for the wide man.
But Balague reported a twist in the young Spaniard’s situation as he insisted that it is not cut and dried that he will move to Milan.
“Also, nothing has happened with Gerard Deulofeu so far but I believe a call from Boro might arrive soon,” Balague told Sky Sports during a Q/A session.
This follows Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport claiming on Wednesday that Milan have submitted a fax to the Merseyside club detailing their loan-to-buy bid for the Spaniard.
Deulofeu has seen his game time reduced this season under new manager Ronald Koeman who arrived in the summer from Southampton.
The highly-rated winger has played just 13 games in all competitions this term, starting only five of those matches as he has failed to score a goal.
It is said by the Italian publication that they are waiting for a response from Everton in regards to Deulfeou but are encouraged by the stance of the player as he is pushing to leave Goodison Park.
The Merseyside club recently signed Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, having already purchased teenager Ademola Lookman from Charlton for £11million.
Football Insider verdict:
A move to Middlesbrough would do Gerard Deulofeu the world of good. The 22-year-old is highly-rated and has proven before that he can perform at a decent level. However, the Spaniard has not shown this on a consistent basis. Moving to Boro, a recently promoted side, would help him because the expectations would be lower. A loan move would suit the former Barcelona man as he still has a lot to learn in the game. Not only that, Boro strikers Alvaro Negredo and Rudy Gestede would benefit from Deulofeu who has a magnificent crossing ability. If he is successful then he can show his current manager that he has the ability to perform on a consistent level.
In other Everton transfer news, this attacker has signed after the Toffees agreed terms.
