Guimaraes, Trippier react to Jacob Murphy message after promising Arsenal showing

Jacob Murphy has delivered a public message following his promising showing against Arsenal.

The winger played 45 minutes as Newcastle fell to a 3-2 defeat against the Gunners, but managed to level the scores at 2-2 just before the hour mark with a clinical strike from distance.

Despite not being the most high-profile name, Murphy continued to prove himself an important player for Eddie Howe last season, registering nine goals and 14 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions to help Newcastle win the EFL Cup.

Already battling against the likes of Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes, Murphy will now face competition for minutes from summer signing Anthony Elanga — who also scored against Arsenal in Singapore on Saturday.

Murphy posted a video on Instagram on Tuesday showing clips of Newcastle’s time in Singapore, including his strike to beat David Raya.

The post — which was captioned with a video camera emoji — very quickly broke the 1,000-like mark, and among them were Newcastle teammates Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier.

Murphy and Newcastle will now travel to Seoul, where they’ll continue their pre-season preparations with a glamour exhibition against the K-League All Stars, and then a clash with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies open their 2025/26 Premier League campaign away at Aston Villa on 16 August.

Newcastle ready to jump on striker merry-go-round

It’s been a torrid summer so far for Newcastle, who have been beaten to the signings of Hugo Ekitike and James Trafford by Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively.

But it could be about to get worse, with Liverpool coming back for another push at Alexander Isak, despite capturing Ekitike from under Newcastle’s noses.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider that Liverpool still have the finances to make such a push, meaning it could be impossible for Howe to hold onto his star man.

“I think they can still spend,” he said.

“Clearly, they’re making a choice to really go for it. I think for their fans the signings they are making are very exciting.

“I think the squad looks brilliant. It looks good right now, but if they were to sign Isak and a centre-half as well, then the squad’s going to look fantastic.

There is a silver lining, however, with former Premier League scout Mick Brown backing Newcastle to win the race to sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, despite competition from Manchester United.
