Hackett hits back at MOTD pundit's comments on Chelsea controversy v Leicester

Keith Hackett has hit back at Ashley Williams’ claim that Timo Werner was fortunate to win a penalty as Chelsea beat Leicester.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League referee praised VAR for showing the foul took place inside the area.

During Tuesday’s game, Wesley Fofana bundled into the back of Werner on the edge of the Foxes’ box.

Mike Dean pointed to the spot and Jorginho slotted away the all-important goal as Chelsea won 2-1.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Williams claimed it wasn’t a penalty as there wasn’t enough contact from Fofana.

Hackett disagrees with Williams and claims Dean should have given a penalty for a similar incident in the first half.

“In a way, there’s a similarity,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“If you give that one, you have to give the other one. So I disagree with Williams.

“We criticise VAR often but in fairness, it gave the clarity that the incident was inside the penalty area.

“A good use of VAR in that instance. At the end of the day, it’s a careless challenge. There’s a duty of care from the defender to not go piling in.”

Kelechi Iheanacho’s late goal proved to be nothing but a consolation as Chelsea went third in the table.

The Blues travel to Villa Park for their final Premier League game of the season this weekend.
