Hackett: Referee '100%' made game-changing Celtic error as controversial Bolingoli footage emerges

Motherwell “100 per cent” deserved a penalty in their 2-0 defeat to Celtic, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted Boli Bolingoli should have been punished for a deliberate handball in the Celtic penalty area.

Motherwell’s Kevin van Veen was trying to control a bouncing ball before Bolingoli moved his left hand to the ball to divert where it was set to land.

Referee Chris Fordyce, who had replaced Willie Collum in the first half after he picked up an injury, waved away Motherwell’s appeals.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Graham Alexander was left perplexed by the decision and claimed “it’s easy to give a penalty against us but very, very difficult to give a penalty to us”.

Asked for his assessment of the incident after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It’s a penalty, 100 per cent.

“His arm is extended from his body, he’s made them unnaturally bigger, it’s a penalty kick. Give it.

“Ultimately, that happens in a millisecond but it’s a handball.

“The player knows what he’s done, they should have had a penalty kick.”

Saturday’s game was just Bolingoli’s second appearance of the season as goals from David Turnbull and Jota secured Celtic the win.

He was frozen out under Neil Lennon last season after breaking covid rules before being shipped out on loan Istanbul Basaksehir FK for the season.
