Hackett slams Mings as Aston Villa fans and Smith fume over controversy
Tyrone Mings is much more to blame than Stuart Attwell as Aston Villa lost 3-0 to Chelsea at the weekend, according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-FIFA and Premier League referee insisted Attwell is one of this county’s “top” officials after his performance at Stamford Bridge was criticised.
Villa fans took to Twitter during Saturday’s game to voice their displeasure at his performance.
As quoted by Birmingham Live, Dean Smith claimed the 38-year-old was “inconsistent” with his decisions.
“The one thing about Stuart Attwell is that he’s mobile and a fit referee,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“I thought it was a solid performance.

“If they’re going to question anything, just look at Tyrone Mings and how he missed putting in a challenge on the player and it was pretty poor defending and Chelsea went on to score.
“It might well be, sometimes referees do have baggage. We don’t know how Attwell refereed in previous Aston Villa games.
“But in this game, I thought he officiated quite well. He’s a referee that’s done quite well in the Premier League. He’s refereed four Premier League games this season so that puts him in a top echelon of referees.”
Mings, 28, was at fault for Chelsea’s second goal just after half-time when Mateo Kovacic intercepted his weak backpass to Jed Steer.
Aston Villa had performed well in the first half as only a moment of brilliance from Romelu Lukaku separated the two sides at the interval.
