Haji Wright: Coventry City to accept West Ham summer bid as exit decision made

Haji Wright could be allowed to leave Coventry City at the end of the season and West Ham United are among the clubs plotting a move to sign him.

The Hammers remain in the Premier League relegation zone but believe they will be able to sign the 28-year-old even if they drop into the Championship.

The United States international has enjoyed a productive season in the second tier, but have concerns about whether he is capable of making the step up.

As a result, former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that Wright could be allowed to leave for the right price.

The Hammers are one of a number of teams keeping tabs on his progress if he is allowed to leave the CBS Arena in what could be a crucial transfer window for West Ham.

Could Coventry City accept offers for Haji Wright?

Football Insider previously revealed that Coventry would reject offers for Wright as they were keen to keep him around as a key player of Frank Lampard’s squad.

However, ahead of their increasingly-likely promotion to the Premier League, there is now a feeling he could be allowed to leave with a replacement being eyed.

The USMNT star already has a number of admirers both in England and across Europe, with Coventry set to make a final decision about his future in the summer.

“Coventry have a decision to make,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Is Haji Wright a Premier League player or is he a Championship player? Some players struggle with the step up even if they impress in the Championship.

“Coventry will be assessing that among a number of factors, it looks like they’re going to be promoted, so they have to ask that question of all of their players.

“I’m not convinced he’s a Premier League player, and I hear they aren’t either.

“So they’re looking for where they might be able to get somebody better, and if they find somebody, then they could let Wright go.

“There’s going to be no shortage of interest. West Ham, for example, could make a move even if they’re relegated, because he’s a good option at that level.

“He’s definitely going to be one to watch, though, because I can see Coventry deciding to let him go.”

Which other clubs could make a move to sign Wright?

Should Coventry decide to accept offers for Wright this summer, West Ham are not expected to be the only club alerted to his availability.

Football Insider revealed that Leeds United are admirers of Wright and had considered signing him as they aim to bolster their attacking options.

Daniel Farke aimed to add a new striker to his squad in January and also considered a move for Jorgen Strand Larsen before his move to Crystal Palace.

After missing out on some more high-profile targets, Wright could emerge as a target for Leeds once again if he is made available by Coventry.

His impressive Championship season has led to questions about whether he is ready to make the step up, and Leeds are among the clubs assessing his situation.
