Dietmar Hamann believes Liverpool must win a trophy this season and reach the top four of the Premier League or 2016-17 will be considered a disappointment.
Liverpool have won just once in all competitions during 2017, a narrow 1-0 win against League Two minnows Plymouth in an FA Cup replay.
However, they enjoyed a strong start to the season, with players like Philipp Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane dazzling opposition defenders.
And Hamann told Paddy Power‘s blog that finishing the season without silverware or a spot in the Champions League would be a failure.
“If Liverpool don’t finish in the top four and have no trophy to show at the end of the season – it’s a disappointment. End of,” Hamann declared.
“Klopp must look at his personnel, because this set of players has failed on numerous occasions. There needs to be a thought process throughout the whole club to maximise what’s possible.”
Liverpool’s dismal run of form has seen them slip out of the Champions League places into fifth in the Premier League, as well as being knocked out in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.
A loss to Wolves also saw the Reds’ FA Cup hopes disappear, which means Hamann’s claim of achieving a trophy at the end of the season is actually impossible – unless they win the Premier League.
Losses to Hull and Swansea, and a draw against Sunderland have compounded the Merseyside giants’ recent misery, which Klopp will be hoping to put right against Tottenham at Anfield on Saturday.
A win against Mauricio Pochettino’s side will take them back into the top four if Arsenal or Man City slip up over the weekend, but a loss could see bitter rivals Manchester United leapfrog the Reds.
In other Liverpool news, these three players could cause havoc against Tottenham.
