‘Hang on a minute’ – Matt Le Tissier questions Rob Edwards over binning Middlesbrough for Wolves

Rob Edwards would have been better off staying at Middlesbrough rather than pushing to become Wolves manager considering the current trajectories of both clubs.

That is according to Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier, who has exclusively told Football Insider that he may regret taking the Wolves job at the end of the season if Middlesbrough are promoted.

Wolves have been on the hunt for a new manager for the last 10 days since Vitor Pereira was sacked following a 3-0 defeat to Fulham.

Former boss Gary O’Neil was an early frontrunner to return, but Football Insider revealed last week that Wolves were in talks with Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards over the vacant role.

Edwards did not take charge of Boro’s Championship clash against Birmingham City over the weekend, and is now due to take the reins at Molineux soon.

Edwards has Middlesbrough in a Championship promotion race while Wolves battle relegation

Edwards has previous experience of promotion from the second-tier after he led Luton Town to the Premier League in 2023 in the play-off final against Coventry City.

He was unable to keep Luton afloat in the top-flight then was sacked last season with the club struggling in the Championship, but returned to management to impress at Boro over the last few months.

The 42-year-old guided the Teesside outfit to third place and seven wins from their first 14 league games before he was placed on gardening leave over the weekend.

Wolves, meanwhile, currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League with no wins and just two points from their opening 11 outings of 2025-26.

Le Tissier backs Edwards to be a good fit at Wolves despite challenge to survive

Edwards is unlikely to receive major transfer funds at Wolves in January, as revealed by Football Insider, and so it looks as if he will mostly have to make do with what he has to keep the club afloat in the Premier League against all odds this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Southampton striker Le Tissier questioned his motives behind leaving a club seemingly on the rise in the Championship for one that looks set to be relegated barring a huge upturn in form.

He said: “If I’m managing in his position at the moment, I would look at that Wolves job and think, hang on a minute, what’s more likely to be next season?

“‘Am I more likely to be playing in the Premier League next season if I stay where I am or if I go to Wolves?’ And at the minute, it’s looking like he’s probably got more chance if he stays where he is.

So obviously there’s going to be a massive financial incentive there and that’s something that he’ll have to balance up. But long term, I’m not sure he’s going to be better off in seven or eight months’ time when the end of the season comes.”
