Senior Celtic player must never feature again after nightmare showing v Zenit

COMMENT
Celtic’s 3-0 loss to Zenit in the Europa League should be the last game that goalkeeper Dorus de Vries plays for the club.
The 37-year-old senior player exposed himself as a liability in Europe for the second time in his short stay in Glasgow. After shipping seven goals to Barcelona in the Champions League last season, he turned in another hapless performance in Europe.
His attempt at saving Zenit’s second goal, a swerving shot by Daler Kuzyaev, was dreadful, he didn’t get anywhere near the ball, which he really could have saved.
Brendan Rodgers has to take him out of the firing line of Sunday’s match against Aberdeen.
The game has turned into a must-win for the Hoops, as a defeat could see their lead at the top of the table cut to just six points, and a player who doesn’t inspire confidence and only fear like de Vries can’t be involved.
The game seems ideal for the debut of Scott Bain, who was signed on-loan from Dundee in January. He was signed as back-up to de Vries, but there is a decent chance that he could be the Hoops number one until Craig Gordon makes his return from injury.
If de Vries does play against the Dons, then questions really have to be asked of the manager’s judgement, as it looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
