Harry Kane cited as Dominic Calvert-Lewin forces Leeds into transfer U-turn

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has hit an incredible vein of form for Leeds United and continued his incredible goalscoring run against Crystal Palace.

Daniel Farke’s side smashed Palace 4-1 at Elland Road as Calvert-Lewin scored a brace, with Leeds’ set-piece dominance paying off for all four goals.

The forward has now scored in each of his last five games for Leeds, matching the record Premier League run set by Mark Viduka, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Rod Wallace.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown warned Football Insider in October that Leeds would need to sign a striker after Calvert-Lewin’s disappointing start.

However, after an incredible turnaround, the striker has now been tipped for a stunning recall to Thomas Tuchel‘s England squad, having not represented the Three Lions since 2021.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin tipped for England call-up

The striker’s performance against Palace saw the supporters at Elland Road singing “England’s number nine”, and they may not be far off with their claims.

Tuchel has a problem up front, with Harry Kane the undisputed starter, but the depth behind him has become a major concern in recent months.

Ollie Watkins would be Kane’s usual understudy, but his form has dipped, while Danny Welbeck has been tipped to return but was snubbed during the last break.

Speaking live on Match of the Day [20 November], former England goalkeeper Joe Hart raved: “Oh, he’s going to be in his [Tuchel’s] thoughts, of course he is.

“He’s proven when he’s fit and when he’s firing, he’s scored six goals in the last five games and I’ve seen him interview recently about how good he feels about his game.

“We’ve talked about Danny Welbeck, Harry Kane of course is going to be there, Ollie Watkins, and a fit Calvert-Lewin is a great option to have.”

Tuchel has certainly now been given a decision to make, the Calvert-Lewin’s displays surely grabbing his attention, although alternative options will be assessed.

Leeds United make U-turn on signing a new striker in January

Since the summer window closed, there has been a feeling that Farke is not content with his attacking options and would like to bolster in January.

However, Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Leeds are prioritising other key positions rather than a new striker thanks to their recent goalscoring exploits.

While potential alternatives have been assessed, Farke’s recent tactical tweaks have seen Leeds find the net far more often, negating the need for a new forward.

Those changes have not only impacted Calvert-Lewin’s future, but also that of the manager who had come under pressure after a string of poor results.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider that Farke is safe in his role at Leeds and the club hope to back him as the man to keep them in the Premier League.
