Harry Kane to Arsenal: Boardroom source’s verdict after release clause update
Arsenal failed to land a new striker in January but are expected to step up their search in the upcoming summer window.
And in a recent twist, Tottenham legend Harry Kane has been mooted as a potential option for the Gunners – with pundits Paul Merson and Joe Cole insisting he would be a good fit at the Emirates Stadium.
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (11 February) that Kane will be available for £54million via a release clause next January – but Bayern Munich are relaxed about the prospect of losing him as he is currently happy at the club.
The England captain was on the books at Arsenal as an eight-year-old before going on to join Tottenham and make history in the other half of north London.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on Kane making a dramatic return to the Premier League with Arsenal.
Arteta would veto Kane move at Arsenal, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted it wouldn’t be worth the “emotional aggravation” for Kane to join the Gunners.
The 31-year-old scored 280 goals for Tottenham before leaving for Bayern in 2023, but speculation is ramping up over a potential Premier League return.
Wyness insisted Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal fans would veto a move for Kane with a younger option likely to be at the top of the club’s wishlist.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This has made the headlines.
“I think it would be very hard for Kane to come back with Arsenal, I don’t think it’s in him to do it.
“I think the media are having a bit of fun with it.
“Kane doesn’t fit the age profile for Arsenal right now, so I don’t think Mikel Arteta would want it.
“I don’t think it’d be worth the emotional aggravation for Kane to go to Arsenal, where the fans wouldn’t be overjoyed to see him.
“They’d rather see a younger player come in. I think we can put this one in the category of media mischief.
“It would’ve been fun from the outside, but I don’t think it’s the right way forward for Arsenal.”

Arsenal confident of signing 23-year-old this summer
Meanwhile, Arsenal are confident of agreeing another summer deal – with negotiations already advanced over a deal for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.
Football Insider revealed on 10 February that Arsenal expect to finally land 23-year-old Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia in the off-season.
The Gunners tried to sign Garcia last summer (2024) but instead agreed a loan for Neto – and they will not pursue a permanent move for the Bournemouth star in the summer.
