‘Harry Kane to replace Bruno Fernandes as Man United captain’ – ‘Oh my goodness’
Harry Kane could even replace Bruno Fernandes as Man United captain if he joins in the summer, according to an ex-England striker.
The 31-year-old striker joined Bayern Munich [BBC Sport] in August 2023 from Tottenham for €100million (£86.4million), following over a decade with Spurs’ senior team.
Kane has gone on to take the Bundesliga by storm, scoring 76 goals in 82 appearances for the Bavarian side in two seasons.
However, the English striker remains tantalisingly close to Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goal record and a return to England has regularly been mooted of late.
It is believed Kane will have a release clause of £54million this summer and he has been heavily linked with a move to Man United, given the struggles of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee this season.

Harry Kane signing will benefit struggling Rasmus Hojlund
Speaking on talkSPORT (24 March, 5.26pm) former Tottenham and England striker, Darren Bent, explained why he thinks the signing of Kane could have a major impact on not only United as a team, but also the benefits he would bring for Hojlund, who has struggled to score this season, saying: “He’s [Kane] not only someone you can learn off, he’s also a leader, he could walk in and be captain.
“I know Bruno’s your captain, but he’s just got that presence hasn’t he, he’s also gonna look after the young lads.
“Someone like Hojlund, I don’t really look at Zirkzee as a number nine, more Hojlund, centre-forward, imagine him watching Harry Kane every single day!
“How he looks after himself, how he finishes, the extras that he does, I mean, if Man United were to get him, oh my goodness. He used to scare the life out of me, Harry Kane.”
Whilst replacing Fernandes as captain would be a potential controversial move within the Red Devil’s playing squad, Kane would bring the pedigree of being one of, if not the world’s best striker.
Offering the former Spurs talisman the captain’s armband may tip the scales in United’s favour when it comes to signing England’s all-time leading goal-scorer, with other Premier League heavyweights in the mix to sign him.
Man United to battle with Liverpool, Tottenham, and Arsenal for Harry Kane signing
Football Insider Verdict
Signing Kane will be a difficult process this summer for United, with the fee potentially being paid one of the simpler aspects of any deal.
The Bayern striker’s cost has been established thanks to his release clause, but the Red Devils are restricted by profit and sustainability rules (PSR) this summer.
2024/25 League stats | Kane | Hojlund | Zirkzee |
Appearances | 24 | 24 | 29 |
Starts | 22 | 17 | 12 |
Goals | 21 | 3 | 3 |
Assists | 6 | 0 | 1 |

Any deal would likely need to be financed through the sales of current first-team players, such as Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea or fan-favourite Kobbie Mainoo.
What’s more, it is not often that one of football’s best strikers becomes available at a relatively affordable price-point.
Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked with a move for Kane, whilst Tottenham hold a long-standing interest in re-signing their former striker.
