Harry Maguire and James Maddison lead ex-Leicester stars in reaction to Jamie Vardy’s announcement
Jamie Vardy’s announcement on social media earned plenty of reactions from former Leicester City teammates.
Leicester were officially relegated from the Premier League after their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on 20 April, confirming their return to the Championship after a disappointing campaign.
In the hours following the result, Vardy shared an emotional message to Leicester fans, apologising for the club’s downfall this season and reflecting on the pain of relegation.
Now 38, Vardy has continued to play a key role for the club, scoring seven goals this season. His journey remains one of football’s most iconic, having joined Leicester from non-league Fleetwood Town for £1 million in 2012 and going on to become a Premier League champion and England international.
Although his emotional message struck a chord with supporters, it was a separate video post that followed shortly after–one that made his future with the club clear.
Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Leicester City | 496 | 198 | 69 |
Fleetwood Town | 40 | 34 | 17 |

Jamie Vardy confirms Leicester City exit after 13 historic years
Leicester legend Vardy posted a video on Instagram to personally deliver the news that he will be leaving the club after 13 unforgettable years.
The announcement was met with an outpouring of admiration from former teammates. Harry Maguire simply wrote “Legend” while James Maddison responded with a teary-eyed emoji.
Youri Tielemans, who won the FA Cup alongside Vardy, left an applause emoji, and Kasper Schmeichel–Leicester’s title-winning goalkeeper–commented, “Simply incredible”.
Vardy’s numbers speak for themselves. He’s scored 198 goals in 496 appearances for the Foxes and played a pivotal role in their most iconic moments.
He lifted the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield. In the 2019/20 season, he became the oldest player to win the Premier League Golden Boot and has continued to contribute this term, showing no signs of slowing down as he mentioned that he will not be retiring yet.
Ruud van Nistelrooy set for Leicester City departure after poor run

Following Vardy’s announcement, another departure from the club is expected, with Football Insider revealing that manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is on the verge of being sacked.
The Dutchman has endured a tough spell in charge, winning just two league matches since replacing Steve Cooper in November. With relegation confirmed and a return to the Championship looming, Leicester are preparing to make changes at all levels.
An official announcement regarding Van Nistelrooy’s future is expected before the season ends, as the club looks to reset ahead of their campaign in the second tier.
