Harry Maguire future being decided as multiple Man United sources provide contract update

Man United sources are reportedly confident that an agreement will eventually be found with Harry Maguire.

The defender’s current deal expires this summer, and he can enter into negotiations with other clubs already.

But BBC Sport reports that multiple sources believe a resolution will be found to keep the 32-year-old at Old Trafford.

Man United may attempt to agree on a shorter deal with lower wages with Maguire, as part of Jim Ratcliffe’s efforts to cut costs.

But Michael Carrick will be keen to keep the defender at the club, after he played a key part in the interim manager’s winning start.

Man United keen to strike Harry Maguire agreement

Maguire’s Man United career has been one of constant doubt, and eventual redemption.

The Red Devils signed the centre-back from Leicester City in a record deal worth around £80million in 2019, a figure that drew surprise at the time.

He was handed the armband in his first season, but his early career at Old Trafford was littered with mistakes.

Man United fans were calling for the defender to be sold as early as 2020, just one year after he arrived.

And after the 2022-23 season, in which Maguire had made just 16 Premier League appearances and was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag, they looked set to get their wish.

However, an exit did not materialise, and in recent seasons, the 32-year-old has started to become more reliable, often putting in big performances and coming up with big moments.

But injuries have become more frequent for the former Leicester City man, too, and he has missed around two months of action this season due to a muscle issue.

Maguire has now returned and has shown in recent weeks just how important he is. Decision-makers will hope to strike an agreement that will see him stay put for at least another year.

What Michael Carrick said about ‘fantastic’ Maguire

Maguire returned from injury for Carrick’s first game back in charge of Man United, which came against Man City.

The defender played the full 90 minutes, and has featured from the start in every one of the Red Devils’ clashes since.

“It was a big ask for H,” said Carrick after his side had won the Manchester derby 2-0. “I have to say, credit to him. People take it for granted sometimes what players do.

“For him to play today and come through it. It was a bit of a calculated gamble because he only trained for two or three days. It just shows you what it means for him. He was fantastic. Him and Licha were so solid at the back.”
