Harry Maguire sends message to Man United teammates after his howler
Man United defender Harry Maguire took to social media to send a message to the fans after his mistake led to Rangers’ equaliser in their 2-1 Europa League win on Thursday (January 23).
The 31-year-old replaced Matthijs de Ligt at half-time, missing a header late in the game that allowed Cyriel Dessers to go one-on-one with Altay Bayindir and score.
United took the lead in the 52nd minute through a Jack Butland own-goal, with the goalkeeper misjudging the flight of the ball from a corner and punching into his own net.
Magurire’s 88th-minute mistake then brought Rangers back into the game, before Bruno Fernandes came to the rescue in added time, latching on to Lisandro Martinez’s pin-point looping pass to score on the volley.
Ruben Amorim’s side have now climbed up to fourth in the new Europa League league phase, with 15 points from their seven games.

The England international has seen somewhat of a revival under Amorim, starting 14 of his 21 games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing zero assists in his 1306 minutes of action.
Maguire took to Instagram after the win over Rangers, complimenting Fernandes on “the finish”, and Martinez on “the pass.”

Amorim’s have one Europa League league phase game remaining, a trip to Romania to face FCSB at the end of the month (January 30).
United’s attention will return to domestic affairs for now, however, as they prepare for a trip to the capital to face Fulham on Sunday (January 26).
