Harry Maguire set to ‘suffer’ at Man United after Erik ten Hag decision – pundit
Frank McAvennie has insisted there is “too much” pressure on Harry Maguire to continue to be the captain at Man United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Maguire’s football has suffered from being captain.
As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (16 July), the 29-year-old admitted last season was disappointing for the team and himself.
The England international added that the team are looking forward to the future.
Erik ten Hag told club media (11 July) that the defender will retain the captain’s armband ahead of next season.
He currently has three years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, with the option for a further year.
When asked if he thought ten Hag made the right decision, McAvennie told Football Insider: “No.
“I think he seems a genuine guy but I think they need to take that pressure off him. I really do.
“I think take the pressure off him, it’s too much for him, it’s too much on his shoulders. He’ll say he loves being captain but his performances are suffering because of it.
“I think he’s got way too much going on at Man United to be captain of that great club. I would say no.“

Maguire scored twice in 36 appearances for the Red Devils last season across all competitions.
He joined United from Leicester in 2019 for a fee of around £80million.
