Harry Redknapp worried about Tottenham ‘common denominator’ amid Postecoglou chaos

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is struggling because of a concerning “common denominator” at the club, according to Harry Redknapp.

The former Spurs manager gave his thoughts on Postecoglou’s struggles to Alan Brazil and Ray Parlous on talkSPORT on 7 February.

Redknapp led Tottenham to one of the club’s most successful periods in recent times, developing Luka Modric and Gareth Bale whilst competing in the Champions League.

The current boss meanwhile is overseeing one of the North London side’s trickiest periods, as Spurs sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Postecoglou has been criticised for his tactics against Liverpool, after the Reds overturned a 1-0 first-leg lead, to beat Spurs 4-1 on aggregate in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

However, Redknapp thinks that the issues that the Australian is facing stem from the coaching staff supporting him at Spurs, a constant through the recent churn of managers.

Redknapp said on talkSPORT (8.11am): “Wherever Ange seems to go, he doesn’t take anyone with him. He comes in and he works with the people he takes over. He looks a very lonely figure to me.

“I watch him on the touchline and I never see anybody come up to him and go ‘eh, gaffer, Ange, what about this?’

“You gotta have people around you that have got opinions. It’s no good having people around you who go ‘oh, yes Ange or no Ange’. I do worry about that, I always took people with me who had strong opinions.”

Redknapp then said: “It seems to me there is one common denominator there, the coaching staff seems to have been there with all the managers that have come and gone

“I just wonder if he could come and do with a bit of help there.”

Tottenham face major test against Aston Villa to save their season

Football Insider Verdict

Spurs will face Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Sunday (9 February), and will be hoping to avoid crashing out of both domestic cups in the space of two games.

Aston Villa revealed their Champions League squad, showing how Unai Emery is spoilt for choice with options this season as he left out Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia.

Postecoglou has the opposite problem as injuries continue to plague Spurs, Richarlison went off injured against Liverpool, forcing the Australian to give Mathys Tel who was signed from Bayern Munich on Deadline Day an impromptu debut.

Spurs are still in the Europa League, and if they are able to win either of the two competitions they remain in, this season could still be considered a success.

Ange Postecoglou cuts a lonely figure on Tottenham touchline

Redknapp was able to speak from experience about what can make a Spurs manager successful.

Postecoglou has looked like a lonely figure on the touchline, and is nowhere near as animated as he was in his first season at the club.

This may be due to the fact that, you can shout all you want, but being forced to play players out of position on a consistent basis is an unwinnable tactic.

Staff within Tottenham have been frustrated at Daniel Levy, due to his failures to support the Australian manager in the transfer market, and Postecoglou looks like he has been hung out to dry by the Spurs chairman.
