‘Harvey Elliott needs to grow up’ – Fans rage after ‘criminal’ decision

Harvey Elliott will be central to England’s campaign in the Under-21 European Championship as uncertainty grows over his Liverpool future.

Liverpool‘s transfer business early in the summer window has been dominated by big-money incomings like Jeremie Frimpong, with Florian Wirtz set to sign for a record-breaking Premier League transfer fee.

Frimpong, the soon-to-arrive Wirtz and Milos Kerkez are set to significantly strengthen Arne Slot’s title-winning team at Anfield, but these signings will push players like Elliott further down the pecking order.

The 22-year-old’s future beyond this summer therefore looks set to lie away from Anfield, and a number of clubs in the Premier League and Europe have already enquired about signing the versatile Elliott.

Football Insider revealed in April that Liverpool will demand between £40–50million for Elliott amid interest from Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, but that price tag could ward off further enquiries.

Elliott picks up England award after insipid Slovenia display

Although much of the attention on Elliott this summer will be focused on his long-term future, the midfielder’s current priority is on the 2025 Under-21 Euros with Lee Carsley’s England squad in Slovakia.

Both Elliott and his Liverpool team-mate Jarell Quansah featured for the Young Lions in their 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Sunday (15 June), which leaves them second in Group B behind historic rivals Germany.

England were unable to break Slovenia down in a timid display which saw Elliott come closest when he hit the woodwork in the first half, but at full-time he was surprisingly given the man-of-the-match award.

Elliott ‘woeful’ as fans react to surprise England award

Elliott is expected to leave Liverpool this summer once he returns from international duty with England, but his performance against Slovenia didn’t endear the midfielder to other Three Lions supporters.

The 22-year-old and Manchester City’s own exit-linked youngster James McAtee both received criticism for their part in England’s draw, and Carsley’s decision not to substitute the pair was called “criminal”.

In a performance called “woeful” and “laboured”, Elliott didn’t put in a display to suggest that he’ll be on the move for more game-time this summer, and instead “stunk the place out” in the eyes of some fans.
