Harvey Elliott to surely be handed Liverpool lifeline after exit confirmed

Harvey Elliott is surely set to earn a second chance at Liverpool after the club decided to sack manager Arne Slot.

Elliott endured a nightmare loan spell at Aston Villa this season, with Slot deciding that the 23-year-old was not part of his plans.

The midfielder’s spell at Villa Park made a permanent departure from Liverpool likely this summer under Slot, with Elliott only having a year left on his current deal at the club.

However, Andoni Iraola’s expected arrival at Anfield may reignite Elliott’s time on Merseyside, whilst a change of manager will give him a fresh start.

Iraola is the favourite to replace Slot at Liverpool ahead of the summer transfer window, with the Spaniard known for developing young talent during his time at Bournemouth.

Liverpool admit wrong Harvey Elliott move

Speaking to Football Insider, former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness said his Liverpool contacts felt Slot made the wrong decision letting Elliott leave on the loan.

With a new manager incoming, Elliott could now have pre-season to make a claim to be part of Liverpool’s plans for the campaign.

Elliott has shown his quality in the Premier League before under Jurgen Klopp, with the midfielder contributing three goals and six assists in the 2023-24 season when he was handed 34 appearances under the German.

When Slot arrived, that figure dropped to one goal and two assists in 18 appearances, highlighting that a new manager could be what Elliott needs at Anfield.

The departure of Mohamed Salah will also free up a space down the right flank which Elliott could make a claim for if he impresses in pre-season.

Leeds transfer could be jeopardised by Liverpool developments

Whilst Elliott could be handed another opportunity at Liverpool, bids could come in for him this summer from rival Premier League clubs.

Leeds are currently one of the front-runners to sign Elliott, who would be able to offer him regular football at Elland Road.

Liverpool are set to demand around £25million if they wanted to let Elliott leave, although the Reds’ next manager could block any move from happening.

It is set to be an important summer for Elliott, who has a big decision to make on his future, and whether he wants to fight for his place at Anfield.
