Mateusz Klich can be Leeds United’s version of Aston Villa midfield gem John McGinn as he prepares to sign a new contract.
That is the verdict of ex-United forward and lifelong fan Noel Whelan, as he told Football Insider how the Poland international can make the grade at Premier League level.
Leeds Live reported today the Klich has agreed the terms of a new deal and will put pen to paper “in the coming days”.
Whelan is in doubt about the significance of a player who has been transformed by manager Marcelo Bielsa into a top quality Championship performer.
“It’s great news for Leeds that Klich is agreeing a new deal,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He’s in the starting XI every game and there are no better midfielders in the Championship at the moment, on or off the ball.
“It’s only right he gets a new deal and it provides security for the club as he is a key asset. We don’t want to lose him. He is an international and you can see how important he is at Leeds.
“I think he can play at Premier League level. He is technically good, cool on the ball and quick-thinking. In the Premier League, it is all about the quickness of thinking and releasing the ball at the right moment.
“I know there is a difference between Klich and players like Paul Pogba, but he can be our John McGinn.”
The Villa midfielder was hugely influential with his goals and assists from midfielder as he spearheaded their promotion to the Premier League last season via the play-offs.
The Scotland international has taken that form into the Premier League this season, scoring two goals from their six league matches to date from his central midfield role.
