'He needs help' - Exclusive: Hutton disturbed by Leeds 26-yr-old ahead of PL return

Alan Hutton admits he has doubts over whether Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has the mental strength to lead the line in the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Aston Villa defender insists that the 26-year-old has the technical ability to be a success in the top-flight but that he is concerned by what he has seen this season.

Bamford has netted 16 times in 47 appearances for Leeds this term but has been guilty of passing up some gilt-edged opportunities for Marcelo Bielsa’s division winners.

Hutton admits he has seen the striker’s head drop a couple of times and insists that he cannot allow to lose confidence if he is to be the Whites’ first-choice striker.

Asked if Bamford has what it takes to lead the line next season, Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s a difficult one – he’s definitely got the ability, it’s whether he’s on it in his head to consistently play at that high standard.

“I’ve obviously seen him through the season go through great patches and score goals but as well we’ve seen him miss a few chances and it looks like his head goes down a little bit and the difference, for me, in the Premier League is you don’t get as many chances as the Championship.

“If you’re only getting one or two a game, you have to take them, it’s going to be difficult. He’ll be looking forward to the challenge but he does need help in the number nine position.”

Bamford drew a blank last night after being withdrawn at half-time in their 4-0 demolition of Charlton Athletic.

He was replaced at half-time by Tyler Roberts, who scored Leeds’ third goal of the evening six minutes later as they ended the season in style.
