‘He wants to join Newcastle’ – Top source updates on ‘great talent’ completing move

Newcastle United have been backed to beat some of the biggest clubs around Europe to the signing of an exciting midfielder who wants to join them.

The Magpies are currently in the middle of a poor run of form, having lost four of their last six Premier League matches.

Just before the international break, Newcastle were beaten 3-1 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, in what was a dismal display.

Eddie Howe’s side have now dropped down to 14th in the Premier League table, just two points above the relegation zone.

Newcastle lead the race for Kees Smit

In recent weeks, Newcastle have been linked to AZ Alkmaar wonderkid Kees Smit, who could reportedly cost around £20million.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the midfielder is very interested in a move to St James’ Park.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that, according to his contacts, Newcastle is Smit’s preferred destination.

Wyness added that the Netherlands Under-21 international will eventually attract interest from the biggest clubs around Europe.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Yeah, look, there is big interest in him. I spoke to my Dutch contact this week, who said that Newcastle is the preferred option for the player.

“I think that makes sense. It would be a great place for him to go. He is a great young talent. There is interest from the big clubs in Europe, certainly. But I think the Barcelonas etc., may come at the next stage of his career if he were to kick on.

“Newcastle is the perfect fit, and I’m told that there is interest from the player’s side about making that move. So let’s see where that one goes.”

Newcastle make transfer decision on defender

Meanwhile, Newcastle will make a final decision about the future of Fabian Schar in January as he approaches the end of his contract.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that the 33-year-old could be allowed to leave despite discussing a new deal with the club.

This comes after Football Insider revealed Newcastle are holding contract talks with Schar as they have been keen to extend his stay at the club.

However, given his age and the level of interest in him, there is a growing belief that he could leave St James’ Park and allow Howe to refresh his back line.
