Kevin Campbell is baffled by William Saliba’s treatment at Arsenal after the defender sealed a loan move to Nice.
The former Gunners striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is adamant that the 19-year-old still has a future at the Emirates and believes it will be easier for him to settle at the club once the “deadwood has been cleared out” by the summer.
The club confirmed yesterday that Saliba has joined Ligue 1 side Nice on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign.
The centre-half is yet to make a senior appearance for Arsenal since joining from St Etienne in the summer of 2019 for £27million.
He spent last season on loan at St Etienne, and has only featured for the Gunners Under-23 side this season.
When asked by Football Insider if he believes the teenager still has a future at the Emirates, Campbell said: “It is baffling why he has not been involved.
“I have questioned the decision but clearly Mikel Arteta has a plan.
“The loan to Nice is just a loan, there will be no option to buy at the end of the season so he will come back.
“Having him on the bench and playing for Arsenal is one thing but getting him regular first team football is another. It is much more beneficial to him. Arteta is hedging his bets that Saliba is going to impress at Nice and will be ready for next season.
“By the summer, the deadwood will have been cleared out – the centre-halves whose future is not at Arsenal. It will be an easier transition for Saliba.”
