James Maddison confirms successful surgery after ACL injury

Maddison has shared an emotional update with supporters after undergoing surgery for the ACL injury that has ruled him out for much of the upcoming season.

Posting on Instagram, the Tottenham midfielder confirmed surgery had gone well but admitted it came during the “lowest low” of his career, adding that he was “heartbroken” the setback had arrived just as the Premier League campaign was about to begin and in a World Cup year.

Messages of support poured in from across the footballing world. Cristian Romero commented: “Stay strong my brother. We’re waiting for you,” while former Spurs teammate Heung-min Son, who recently moved to LAFC, added: “My boy, don’t know what to say… get well soon. You will come back stronger than ever. Thinking of you.”

Other notable figures, including Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish and Declan Rice, also showed their support by liking the post.

Maddison played a key role for Tottenham last season despite reports of a fall-out with Ange Postecoglou.

He had already missed the Europa League final due to a knee injury, and it has now been confirmed that this latest ACL setback affects the same knee he had only recently recovered from.
