Noel Whelan insisted Philippe Coutinho will deeply regret his decision to leave Liverpool but cannot see the Brazilian returning to Anfield.
The former Leeds United forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the 27-year-old will rue his exit given how successful the Reds have gone on to be in his absence.
Reds legend Phil Thompson was quoted by the Evening Standard, telling Sky Sports: “Would you take Coutinho back? I would, in a heartbeat. I think he’s a creative genius.”
The player they called “The Little Magician” left Liverpool in January 2018 in a £142million deal but has failed to meet expectations at the Nou Camp.
Coutinho has spent the last eight months on loan at Bayern Munich and whilst the Bundesliga giants have the option to buy it is unlikely they will exercise it.
When asked by Football Insider if the Brazil international will regret leaving Anfield, Whelan said: “Of course, he will regret leaving. He will be sitting thinking, “What the hell have I done?” But at the time it was good for both
“I am not a fan of bringing people back into clubs soon after they have left. It is a difficult one.
“Coutinho had a great spell at Liverpool. He is an unbelievable player who they sold for an unbelievable amount of money which allowed them to invest in areas.
“They have done better without him. It has not worked out for him at all at Barcelona. Liverpool have won the Champions League and are about to win the Premier League.”
Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United have also been tipped to hand the creative midfielder a route out of Spain.
In other Liverpool news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider starlet should not “damage” his development with Anfield stay.
