'Hell bent' - Heckingbottom reveals inside knowledge on Bristol City ahead of Leeds clash
Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom has revealed he knows exactly what to expect from Bristol City after having worked with their manager Lee Johnson while at Barnsley.
The managerial pair spent a year together at the Tykes, with the new Leeds boss having worked as a coach under Johnson before he left for his current club, leaving Heckingbottom the opportunity to take over as the top man.
Ahead of Sunday’s showdown between the former team mates’ new clubs, the Whites’ manager has said his inside knowledge means what he has seen from Bristol City this season is exactly what he associates with a side managed by ‘Jonno’, and that both men will know just how desperate they are for victory over their counterpart.
He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I am pleased for him because he has been through a couple of tough spells, one at Barnsley and another at Bristol, and come out stronger.
“Bristol are getting the rewards for sticking with him.
“Me knowing ‘Jonno’, his team now is very much in the mould of what he wants. He has been given the time to build and has recruited well.
“He knows we will be hell bent on beating them and he will be the same but there is an appreciation for the job the other is doing.”
Sunday will be Heckingbottom’s first game in front of the Elland Road crowd after replacing Thomas Christiansen at the start of the month, and will be looking to pick up his first victory as manager after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United last weekend.
Johnson’s Bristol City meanwhile come into the clash off the back of a dramatic 3-3 draw with a struggling Sunderland side at home, having taken a 3-0 lead going in to the last 20 minutes, only to let the Black Cats snatch a point with a trio of late goals, the last coming in the second minutes of added time.
