Here’s the state of play for Tottenham hiring Mauricio Pochettino in the summer after deal agreed

Mauricio Pochettino is in line to become Tottenham’s next permanent manager this summer after Igor Tudor’s arrival as interim boss.

Spurs sacked Thomas Frank earlier this week, with the club sitting 16th in the Premier League following a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle.

The search for his successor began imminently, with the likes of Enzo Maresca, Marco Rose and Roberto De Zerbi linked to the vacant role.

Claims around Tudor‘s interest in the job emerged on Friday morning, and Sky Sports have since reported that he has agreed a deal to become Tottenham’s new boss until the end of the campaign.

The 47-year-old is now in line to take charge in North London on a short-term contract, which creates a path for Pochettino to return to Spurs after the World Cup.

Mauricio Pochettino to return to Tottenham after Igor Tudor’s interim spell

Pochettino arrived at Tottenham in 2014 after a stellar spell in charge of Southampton, and he led them to four consecutive top-four finishes, as well the 2019 Champions League final.

The majority of Spurs supporters regard the Argentine boss as their greatest in the modern era, with the club only finishing in the top four of the Premier League twice in the seven seasons since his 2019 departure.

He has since taken charge of the likes of PSG and rivals Chelsea, before being appointed as the new manager of the USA national team on a two-year deal in 2024.

Pochettino has been heavily linked to a Tottenham return both before and after Frank’s sacking, but news of Tudor’s impending arrival points to a pretty obvious outcome ahead of next season.

The 53-year-old was never likely to leave his current post ahead of the World Cup in the States this summer, but his contract with the USMNT ends after the tournament, which is when Spurs will be looking for a new permanent boss.

With Tudor set to sign as interim until the end of this season, Spurs fans can surely look forward to a long-awaited reunion with Pochettino as their new permanent boss before 2026-27.

What has Pochettino said about returning to Tottenham?

Spurs fans have urged Pochettino to return with immediate effect, but he has a contract to uphold with the USA and will want to see the work that he has done with that squad through until the World Cup.

The Argentine has managed in several different countries over the last 17 years, but Spurs are clearly the club that he holds in the highest regard, despite being sacked after five years at the helm.

It remains to be seen if he will definitely go back to the club this summer, but speaking to Sky Sports in March 2025, he certainly seemed open to the idea of a return in the future.

He said: “Look, when I left the club, I always remember one interview (where) I said I would like, one day, to come back to Tottenham.

“I am in the USA, I’m not going to talk about that, but what I said then, still. after six years or five years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back.”

Tudor looks set to take over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from now until the end of the campaign, but Pochettino could well be in place in the dugout by the time 2026-27 rolls around.
