Leeds blitz ahead of 18/19: Attacker snubs Spain to agree terms as two deals could be done

By Richard Parks

Pablo Hernandez has revealed he snubbed a return to Spain to commit himself to Leeds United next season as the club are on the verge of a second new deal.

The former Spain international, 33 has agreed the terms of a two-year contract extension that was announced by United on their official website on Thursday morning.

Hernandez subsequently explained at a media conference on Thursday morning, as quoted by Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay on his personal Twitter account, that he had the chance to join clubs in his native Spain but was keen to remain at what he hailed a “special club”.

The extension for the veteran attacking midfielder comes as manager Paul Heckingbottom confirmed that left-back Tom Pearce is also in line for a new deal.

The United boss explained Pearce is to be offered an extension to his current agreement, which expires at the end of the season, after breaking into the first team in recent weeks.

Heckingbottom’s revelation was also reported by  Hay on his personal Twitter account.

Leeds academy product Pearce, 20, has made three senior appearances after being fast-tracked following Gaetano Berardi’s suspension and long-term injuries to Luke Ayling and Laurens De Bock.

Football Insider verdict:

As preparations begin to be made for next season, this is significant and timely business by United. Signing up Pearce to a new contract is not quite the mega deal of Hernandez, the team’s outstanding player this season who is nailed on to win the Leeds player of the year. Nevertheless, it is in the nick of time as the left-back is out of contract in June and free at that point to find a new club. Pearce has made a strong impression in recent weeks, taking full advantage of the senior full-back absences to press a convincing claim for a far bigger role next season. Hernandez is at the other end of his career, but it is a huge boost to Leeds that he has rejected a return to Spain to commit for two more years.

In other Leeds United news, it can be revealed that Andrea Radrizzani is ready to end the careers of 13 senior players at the club in a jawdropping cull.
