Paul Robinson has tipped Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso to have more of an impact in the coming weeks after he was wowed by his performance against Southampton on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper also admitted his surprise that the 24-year-old has not featured more this season.
After being left out of the squad for Tottenham’s opening Premier League game against Everton, the midfielder was introduced from the bench at half time in their 5-2 win at Southampton on Sunday.
Spurs manager Jose Mourinho said after the game, as reported by Football.London, that the Argentine was “very, very tired and he clearly wouldn’t be able to play 90 minutes”.
Asked by Football Insider about the impact that Lo Celso could have this season, Robinson said: “I think he’s a great player.
“I like what he’s done since he’s come in, he’s surprised me with the other side of his game, the defensive midfield role, putting his foot in and doing the hard work.
“He came on in the second half (against Southampton) and Spurs were a lot better.
“His performances have been consistent, he’s not inconsistent, his performances haven’t been up and down.
“I’m surprised he hasn’t started this season. I think we’ll see a lot more of him in the coming weeks.”
Lo Celso joined Tottenham last summer on an initial loan deal before it was converted to a permanent transfer in January.
He played a total of 37 games across all competitions for Spurs last season, netting two goals and providing three assists.
