Everton fell to a 4-1 defeat away at Arsenal on Saturday in what was a disappointing evening for the Toffees in London.
An Aaron Ramsey hattrick along with goals from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Laurent Koscielny consigned the Blues to their 11th defeat of the season on a night where a Dominic Calvert-Lewin effort was their only ray of light.
But it was the omission of new club signing Cenk Tosun from the starting line-up once again that led to questions regarding the player’s handling of life in the Premier League so far.
Allardyce admitted that the £27million former Besiktas star was finding it difficult to adapt to the physical nature of the English top-flight but hoped that by the end of the season his multi-million-pound signing would be in the starting XI.
“He’s had service to him that he’s not held up and he’s found it a bit of a struggle at this level because of the pace and the physicality of the game,” said Big Sam in the Liverpool Echo.
“So his service hasn’t been too bad but his hold up play hasn’t been like it was at Besiktas so that’s why he’s not starting the games at the minute because he’s finding it tough going like every player does, particularly when they come in January.
“I’m more concerned about the other players than I am about Cenk. I’m more likely to feed him slowly and give him a bit more time over the next few weeks and hopefully by the end of the season he starts games.”
The Toffees manager chose to go with the young Calvert-Lewin from the off instead of the more experienced Turk as they came away with a result that pushes them right back down towards the relgation zone.
And it was not until the 78th minute that supporters of the Blues got to see the most expensive player in the history of the Turkish Super Lig.
At Besiktas, Tosun had an incredible goalscoring record with 14 goals in 25 appearances but has not looked like emulating that since his move.
