‘He’s key and it’s not about money’ – Kinnear reacts to speculation about Leeds first teamer
By Harry Sykes
Leeds United managing director Angus Kinnear has revealed the club have no intention of selling Chris Wood this summer.
Reports have linked United’s striker and star man with a summer exit, with the New Zealand Herald in his homeland claiming the captain of the national team could have his head turned amid interest from Southampton, Swansea and Stoke.
But Kinnear delivered a firm hands-off message on BBC Radio Leeds on Tuesday night to suitors of Wood, 25, just five days before the Championship season kicks off.
The White Knight LUFC Twitter account quoted the executive as saying Wood is “key” and it is “not about making money” by cashing in on the club’s prize asset.
The Kiwi front man topped the Championship goal charts last season with 27 and scored 30 times in all competitions.
New manager Thomas Christiansen has spoken of his desire for Wood to continue where he left off last season and spearhead the team’s promotion challenge.
Leeds have signed attacking players Samuel Saiz, Ezgkan Alioski and Caleb Ekuban to offer more support to target man Wood and it has been reported they are making progress in a sensational attempt to sign ex-Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo.
Football Insider revealed on Monday that Leeds have ramped up their interest in Joe Bryan, regarded as one of the best left-backs in the Championship, and a £5million double bid has now been lodged for two players wanted by the club.
In other Leeds transfer news, a left-back has headed to Elland Road as he aims to secure a permanent transfer from top-flight club.
