‘He’s not up to it’ – Exclusive: Danny Mills destroys Spurs star lacking top-four quality
EXCLUSIVE
Danny Mills has torn into the quality of Tottenham defender Serge Aurier and insists that the right-back is not of a top-four standard in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Manchester City and England full-back says that the Ivorian international is not up to scratch in comparison with the options available to Spurs’ top-four rivals and that he is a weakness in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Aurier has been the Argentine manager’s first choice on the right-hand side of the defence in recent weeks, with the former PSG man battling with Kyle Walker-Peters to fill the void left by Kieran Trippier.
However, despite being a regular for the Ivory Coast, Mills says that the 26-year-old is some way off his rivals at Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and even north London rivals Arsenal.
Asked if Aurier was a top-four quality right-back, Mills told Football Insider: “No. No I don’t. Internationally he’s very, very good, but I look at it and he’s not quite there, he’s not up to it.
“You’ve got Kyle Walker or Cancelo, you’ve got Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez could play there if necessary, Azpilicueta at Chelsea, you’ve got Bellerin at Arsenal. I think they’re all better than him.
“That’s a weakness since Trippier left.”
Aurier has played twice this season, starting both of the club’s last Premier League games, and has a total of 43 appearances under his belt for the Lilywhites.
Tottenham will be looking to bounce back from their cup embarrassment against Colchester, in which Aurier was left out, with a clash at home to Southampton on Saturday.
In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider that one “powerful” Spurs star looks “all over the place”.
