‘He’s nowhere near the stature for Rangers’ – Keith Wyness ‘unimpressed’ by contender

Gauthier Ganaye is not the right candidate to replace Patrick Stewart as Rangers’ new chief executive.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen and Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Ganaye needs more experience to be considered for the role.

Stewart was sacked as Rangers’ chief executive, alongside sporting director Kevin Thelwell, earlier this month.

Football Insider revealed that Ganaye is in contention to join Rangers with the Frenchman having had experience at Barnsley and Nice, and is currently out of work.

Gauthier Ganaye not ‘the right fit for Rangers’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Ganaye does not have the CV required to take on the position.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the next Rangers chief executive must have “character and personality.”

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I haven’t met him, I don’t know him, but I’ve looked at his CV, and I’m unimpressed, because with the stature that you’ve got to have to be a Rangers CEO he needs more than the experience he’s had. I’ve never seen him make a mark where he’s been.

He tends to have had shorter tenures at each of the places. It’s such an important role as Rangers CEO to have that personality, you’ve got to have a profile. Pointless being behind the scenes. In that corner of Glasgow you’ve got to be up there and out there with the fans communicating and being seen as a strong leader.

Even with the board, you still as a CEO have got to be there and that’s something that is important. And you’ve got to have a personality and a character. That’s where Patrick Stewart did not do well in Rangers. He was seen as a bit of a behind the scenes executive. Whereas Rangers do need and the club needs demands, the fans demand.

Somebody with character and personality. And I don’t think this guy is the right fit for Rangers. I think they’re going to carry on looking. They’ve got to. But good chief executives are very few and far between, particularly those with experience. So we’ll see where they land.

“But they need somebody, as I say, that can actually talk to a camera, speak to people properly, and lead from the front, and make sure the staff follow him as well, and generate excitement and leadership within the club. That will filter into the players and the manager etc. But there’s got to be leadership within the club.”

Danny Rohl to lead January transfer window

Danny Rohl will spearhead Rangers’ January transfer plans due to no chief executive or sporting director being in place at the club.

The German will look to strengthen his squad in the window amid a need to close the gap on league leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers recorded an important 1-0 victory over Hibernian last time out to lift themselves up to third in the table, nine points below Hearts.
