'He's out till next season' - Exclusive: Whelan shares insight on Leeds 28-yr-old

Noel Whelan insisted Adam Forshaw should not be considered for Leeds United selection until next season, regardless of when the current one resumes.

The former Elland Road striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 28-year-old is “a fantastic player” but should focus on the 2020-21 campaign.

Forshaw has not featured for the Whites since injuring his hip in the away defeat against Charlton in September.

The former Middlesbrough player has since travelled to the USA to undergo surgery on his hip and was pictured on social media on an exercise back as he steps his recovery.

When asked if he expected the midfielder to play a role in the remainder of the season when resumed, Whelan told Football Insider: “I think he’s out until next season.

“There is no reason to rush him back and he needs to make sure he is 100%. We have got this far without him – even though he is a fantastic player and would be a bonus to the squad.

“It is primary he gets himself ready without any more setbacks from this injury and gets as fit as he possibly can in preparation. He should be thinking about the start of next season. Getting his body and his mind in place after a difficult season for Adam. He started so well. Right now concentrate on getting yourself healthy, fit and looking forward to a good pre-season.

“The players that have played the majority of the season are the ones that need to be ready for whenever some decision is made.”

Forshaw made 8 appearances this campaign prior to the injury.

In a joint statement the Premier League, FA and, EFL announced the season is “extended indefinitely” due to the outbreak of COVID-19 with the current hopes of an April 30 resumption unlikely.

In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider transfer target is better than Kiko Casilla.
