Noel Whelan slammed Pontus Jansson for contributing to the sudden frailties in a Leeds United defence that suffered another meltdown on Monday night.
United somehow contrived to lose 2-1 to 10-man Wigan Athletic on Good Friday and delivered another poor defensive display on Bank Holiday Monday as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Brentford.
Neal Maupay fired the Bees in front in the first half and Sergi Canos tucked in the hosts’ second after the break to condemn the visitors to a second consecutive defeat.
“The defence has been all over the place and Jansson, he’s been part of the problem,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Suddenly, we look disjointed and vulnerable. Jansson was wrong side and ball watching for the second Wigan goal and for Maupay’s goal.
“It was schoolboy defending. Liam Cooper was a massive miss against Wigan but he played against Brentford and his return didn’t have the effect everyone would have hoped.”
Leeds’ promotion hopes have been badly dented by results of the last four days and they are now relying on Sheffield United and Norwich City slipping up to secure a top-two finish.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have 82 points from 44 league matches, three adrift of second-placed Blades, who also have a superior goal difference.
Leeds are next in action on Sunday, when they face Aston Villa, who have won 10 consecutive league games in a remarkable run.
In other Leeds United team news, it can be REVEALED that the club have set their sights on signing two Liverpool players who have dazzled this season.
