Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is the “main man” in the team after taking his Championship form into the Premier League, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United and Coventry City striker explained why the Scotland international, 24, has emerged as the star player at the Premier League outfit.
The club signed 12 new players this summer and are captained by lifelong Villa fan and star academy product Jack Grealish, but Whelan is in no doubt about the key man in Dean Smith’s side.
McGinn scored his first Premier League goal in the opening-day 3-1 defeat at Tottenham and played the full 90 minutes in both of his side’s games this season.
“He’s the main man now, everyone knows it if you’ve watched Villa play in the last two seasons,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Jack Grealish is brilliant on the ball but more is needed from him, in terms of energy, goals and assists.
“McGinn will be loved in the dressing room as he is the one who makes Villa tick. He has started the season how he finished the last one.
“He is a livewire in the centre of the pitch, creative, tenacious, and so calm and composed. He looks like the Villa player who is really taking the game to the opposition.”
McGinn joined Villa from Hibernian for a cut-price fee of around £3million in the summer of 2018.
He has made 46 appearances for the Midlands giants in all competitions, scoring eight goals as well as supplying 10 assists from central midfield.
