Done deal: Celtic finalise paperwork on defender deal after terms agreed

Celtic have confirmed that right-back Anthony Ralston had agreed terms to sign a new contract with the club.

The 19-year-old has signed a new four-and-a-half year deal after Scottish champions finalised the paperwork to his new contract, which was announced on the Hoops’ official Twitter account and official website on Thursday morning.

The youngster featured prominently at the start of the season for the Hoops, including a start against PSG in the Champions League group stages and scoring his first ever goal against Kilmarnock in the Betfred Cup.

However the defender has been out with an injury and is only new getting back to full fitness.

The player is thought to be the long-term successor to Mikael Lustig as the Hoops’ next right-back.

Football Insider verdict

This seems to be a good piece of business by Brendan Rodgers and the board at Celtic Park. Ralston is very highly-rated at the club and there is a good chance he could have been getting a lot of game time this season if it hadn’t been for his injury problems. With Lustig set to go to the World Cup in the summer there is a good chance that Ralston could be the Bhoys’ right-back for the Champions League qualifiers next season, so the deal makes sense, and Rodgers will be hoping to get Ralston some game time after the winter break next month.
