How Aston Villa could actually benefit from Morgan Rogers’ poor form
Aston Villa could be set to keep Morgan Rogers at the club despite high-profile interest, according to the club’s former senior scout.
Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Sunderland and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham are still keeping a close eye on Rogers.
Rogers has been heavily criticised at Villa following their “awful” start to the season, with his sudden drop in form not going unnoticed including by top clubs.
After missing out on a deal during the summer, when Aston Villa were demanding £80million for Rogers, clubs were expected to reignite their interest in 2026.
However, his recent performances are believed to have put clubs off an imminent move, as they now need to be convinced he can impress through the tough periods.

Morgan Rogers’ form risks interested club distancing themselves
Football Insider revealed on 14 September that Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in Rogers and could make a move after missing out in the summer.
However, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has explained that they could now distance themselves after keeping an eye on his displays.
“There was obviously a lot of interest in Rogers in the summer,” he told Football Insider.
“I think he’s a classic example of a player who was playing well, got his recognition for it with the interest in him and getting in the England squad, but now we need to see more.
“So these teams, the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea, will have scouts watching him to see if he can convince them that this drop in form is only a blip.
“There’s no doubt he’s a talented player, but Villa have had an awful start to the season and he’s been part of that, he hasn’t looked like the same player.
“It’s a concern I’ve had about him throughout his career, yes he can do some wonderful things, but when things are going against him, does he show that same level?

“I don’t doubt some of these interested clubs will think the same thing, but it’ll be up to them and their scouts to decide how big of an issue they think it is.
“If his form continues the way it has been so far this season, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of that interest starts to fade away a bit and these teams look elsewhere.
“It’s up to Rogers to prove that he can put in consistent performances even when things aren’t going well, because that consistency is crucial for the top, top clubs.”
While Villa will be aiming to turn around their poor form in the coming weeks, it has had its surprise benefits, with Rogers’ future still up in the air.
Potential positive for Aston Villa amid transfer department upheaval
Villa are overseeing an upheaval of their transfer department behind the scenes, with their President of Football Operations, Monchi, set to leave the club imminently.
Alberto Benito is in line to replace Monchi in the short-term, with Villa’s chief scout assuming more responsibility in the wake of the Spaniard’s departure.
Despite the ongoing unrest behinds the scenes at Villa Park, potentially keeping hold of Rogers will be seen as a success after they deterred interest in the summer.

Rogers has been backed to find his feet with Villa in the coming weeks, alongside the rest of his teammates, with Unai Emery still seeking his first league win of the season.
However, their dismal form may not be all bad, with the England midfielder now considered more likely to stay given the fading interest in his position.
