Noel Whelan has tipped Aston Villa to be relegated this season despite a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed it is “sod’s law” that the weekend in which they win all of their relegation rivals grab three points as well.
A brace from Trezeguet was enough for all three points but not enough to lift Villa out of the relegation zone as West Ham, Watford and Bournemouth all won their fixtures.
It leaves the Villans 19th and four points adrift of safety with just three games remaining.
Whelan insisted that Dean Smith’s side will need to win all of their remaining games to stand a chance of survival.
“It is sod’s law,” he told Football Insider. “You get a win that you deserve and everyone else goes and wins their games.
“I have been there when it happened at Coventry and you look at the results after the game and you think, “How they hell have they managed that!” It is just sod’s law.
“However, it is something they can work with. It has given them a base and it has given them that winning feeling back.
“They need to win their remaining games. No draws, just wins.
“They will go all out for it because they are desperate to stay in the Premier League but I fear it is too little, too late.”
Everton and Arsenal are up next for the Claret and Blue before a potential relegation cup final against West Ham on the final day of the season.
Villa travel to Goodison Park on Thursday.
