How Trevoh Chalobah ignited his Chelsea career, his pass map speaks volumes

Trevoh Chalobah has impressed Thomas Tuchel this season at Chelsea as he was called up once again to play for England.

Ahead of the World Cup, Chalobah is one of the fringe England players vying for a spot in the squad, given the array of centre-back options available to the German.

Back in September, Tuchel was questioned over selecting Jarell Quansah over Chalobah, given the 26-year-old’s impressive start to the 2025-26 season.

The number 23 made his debut back in June and has just received a fully-merited second call-up to the Three Lions squad for the November internationals, due to other injuries in the squad.

Chelsea swat aside Wolves as Chalobah’s composure on the ball evident

Chelsea were dominant in a 3-0 victory over Wolves on 8 November as Enzo Maresca‘s side kept another clean sheet.

Chalobah was a major part of the Blues shutting out the Wanderers as he racked up four clearances and made four recoveries.

Moreover, his pass map, courtesy of Football Insider’s data partnership with Opta, highlighted his superb ability to recycle the ball as Chelsea maintained the pressure on the Old Gold.

The ex-Crystal Palace man completed 76 of his 78 passes, hitting an accuracy rate of 97 per cent.

Given the importance of passing out from the back for Tuchel, incorporating the Englishman’s distribution into the England team would be a wise move to make, reflected in his call-up.

Chalobah to face fierce competition for starting centre-back spot for England

Whilst the 26-year-old’s club form has certainly warranted an inclusion in the Three Lions squad, it will not be straightforward for the defender to force his way into the starting XI.

The prominence of Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa under Tuchel could signify the manager has found his preferred centre-back pairing.

Similarly, John Stones and Dan Burn offer further complications to Chalobah seamlessly fitting in in the backline, along with the versatile Quansah.

Moreover, Gareth Southgate favourite Harry Maguire remains in the picture, despite not featuring for the German as of yet.

All these incredible centre-backs will provide ample competition for Chalobah as he tries to worm his way into the first team.

However, if the Chelsea man continues to thrive at club level and benefit from the injury-induced absence of Levi Colwill, there is always a chance he could force his way into the starting XI.
