Howe told to 'get on with it' as Newcastle close in on landmark hire - pundit

Michael Emenalo’s imminent appointment at Newcastle United could “undermine” Eddie Howe’s position at the club just days after his arrival, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said it is preferable for a sporting director to be involved in the manager’s selection.

On Monday, Newcastle confirmed the appointment of Eddie Howe on a two-and-a-half year contract.

The ex-Bournemouth boss is set to be joined at St. James’ Park by 56-year-old Michael Emenalo.

A club source told Football Insider yesterday that there is an agreement in place with Emenalo to become the Magpies new sporting director.

Emenalo is highly thought of in the industry after his key role in Chelsea’s success.

He enjoyed 10 trophy-laden years at Stamford Bridge, the last six of which were spent as the club’s technical director.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the imminent arrival of Emenalo, Robinson said:

“I think it is a difficult situation when you employ a sporting director after you employ a manager.

“If you employ a manager and you know a sporting director is coming in, who hasn’t been involved in your appointment, its challenging. It undermines managers, unless the manager is involved in that decision.

“It will be interesting to see how that dynamic works. But, if that is the way the club want to go you have to get on with it.”
