'How's That Happened?' - Whelan 'Really Worried' by what he's seen at Aston Villa
Aston Villa boss Dean Smith will be “really disappointed” with his team’s defending for Brighton’s opener on Saturday, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds United striker claimed Danny Welbeck’s goal exposed Villa’s defensive frailties from last season.
Welbeck scored his first goal for Brighton in a 2-1 victory at Villa Park as the Claret and Blue again struggled against seemingly lesser opposition.
Dean Smith’s side have won against Liverpool, Leicester City and Arsenal already this season but have also been defeated at Villa Park by Southampton, Leeds and Brighton.
Whelan slammed the Villa’s defence for their showing against the Seagulls on Saturday.
“Dean Smith will look at that as a very poor goal,” he told Football Insider. “One pass has split the whole of the side.

“It is a fantastic finish from Welbeck but Dean Smith will be saying, ‘How has that happened?’ There is no way that should have happened.
“The gap between the centre-halves and the full-backs were far too big.
“We know the pace that Danny Welbeck has got and he should have been marked a lot closer. That ball should also not have been able to get through like that.
“It is really worrying because defensively Villa were starting to look a bit more assured but that goal exposed that frailty again.
“In the Premier League that cannot happen, you will get punished nine times out of 10. It is one thing Dean Smith will be really disappointed in.”
