Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp grimaces

Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are in contention to start tonight against Southampton – and it is a “massive” boost for Liverpool, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said summer capture Thiago will be a “huge player” for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season if he stays fit.

Thiago made his return from a two-month injury lay-off as a substitute in Wednesday’s goalless draw at Newcastle United.

Jurgen Klopp told club media this week “there is a chance” that the centre-midfielder could start at Southampton tonight.

The Spain international, signed from Bayern Munich in September, has been limited to just three appearances this season due to injuries and Covid-19.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Thiago’s potential return to the starting eleven, Robinson said: “It is massive to have him back.

“We have not seen enough of him this season.

“I thought he was an outstanding signing. It is very difficult for Jurgen Klopp to make signings that would break into his starting eleven but Thiago is a player who is able to do that.

“Unfortunately, we have not seen enough of him this season but he is going to be a huge player for them this season.

“They also have Oxlade-Chamberlain back which is great. You have to give Liverpool credit because they are top of the league despite their injury problems and the fixture pile-up.”
