Huge Liverpool boost as key player to return against Manchester United

By North-west correspondent Alex Stevens

James Milner is in contention to play for Liverpool in their showdown against Manchester United on Thursday night, Football Insider sources understand.

The midfielder missed the first leg of the Europa League tie last Thursday at Anfield, which Liverpool won 2-0, with a virus.

Jurgen Klopp selected an attacking side that included Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana as the Merseysiders dominated and created a hatful of charges.

A well-placed Liverpool source has told Football Insider that Milner has fully recovered and is ready to return to the starting X1 for the clash at Old Trafford.

The versatile England international has been a regular starter in his first Liverpool season, either in central midfield or in a flank role.

Given Liverpool’s two-goal advantage and Miller’s greater defensive awareness than many of his fellow attacking midfielders, Klopp could restore the player back to the starting X1.

Milner was sent off in his last match, a 2-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace, and will serve a one-match suspension for Sunday’s trip to Southampton.

In other Liverpool team news, Martin Skrtel could be named in the squad after three months out with a hamstring injury.
